I am not one for gadgets really. Show me a “great new TV” that displays 12 billion colours, is only 2 mms thick, makes you toast and weighs the same as a handful of M & Ms, and I would say “nice” while looking for the nearest way out of the room. So you won’t find me talking about gadgets much on here. However, I just saw something this week and did a double take while watching it, so I thought I would share it with you.
Most of you will no doubt remember Hanna Barbera’s The Jetsons - a 1960s cartoon comedy series.
It was pretty much a similar set up to that company’s previous hit The Flintstones, except instead of being in prehistoric times, it was set in “the future” where people went to work in cars that flew through the air. All pretty far fetched and unlikely in our lifetimes, right?
Wrong…
While “Orbit City” still very much lives only in the cartoon, a Swedish company has made those “flying cars” a reality!
And just to remind you of part of their inspiration, the company’s name is Jetson. This isn’t some dim and distant vague plan they’ve cooked up to find backers willing to fund an idea either. If you have a spare $92,000 you CAN actually buy one of their aerocars now (although their order books are already so full you won’t actually take delivery until 2024).
The future is here, if you have the money (and no, neither do I!). Looks pretty damn fun though. Well, this bit of the future does; the heavily polluted, overcrowded, climate changed dystopian part…not so much. Still, just for now let’s focus on the fun part!
If you don’t believe these are real and do actually work, check out the short video below, which shows one of the company founders using one to commute to work...I kid you not.
If that tickled your “oooh” muscle, check out their YouTube channel for more interesting videos on their progress.
That was it, short and sweet. If you’re enjoying these posts, please like, share to your social media channels if you have any, and subscribe if you haven’t already. To those who have, a huge thank you! Have a great weekend; see you next time!
I've been following Jetson for about two years. I'm not sure if it's still up on YouTube but see if you can find their very first test flight of the fully operational prototype vehicle. It literally is four motors attached to what looks like a flying lawn mower chassis and operated from a standard hand-held drone controller. I think the original motor controller *was* from a commercially available drone. The words "b*stard"
and "mad" come to mind as he zips over hedgerows at head height. Highly inspirational.
What a brilliant wee thing, just think how neat our roadside hedges will be when SAC get hold of one of them, and they can do both sides of the road at the same time
